As a working Pro I very rarely waste cash on How-To manuals. Especially on lighting - there appear to be more books on flash photography than there are lighting systems available. And generally I used to follow the "off Camera" theory - a flash off-camera gives far better light than an on-camera flash, even a bounced flash. However, at weddings and some other gigs, there is sometimes no alternative other than to use an on-camera flash. Like most people - pros and amateurs alike - my on-camera flash work was disappointing.
Some time ago I found Neil's blog and started implementing some of his concepts, and his thoughtful analysis of light helped enormously. Even having followed Neil's blog for some time, and blatantly copying some of his techniques (though in court I would swear they were mine) I still decided to fork out for this book.
I can't say it has changed my style too much, but only because I seem to have taken in Neil's "way" to a great extent already. What this book does do for me is make a terrific reference book. So, if you have not yet used some of Neil's techniques, then buy the book. If you ARE using some of them, buy it anyway.
Trust me, my VERY hard earned cash as a working professional would not get wasted on techniques I couldn't use. | | disaapointed: Rating: 3/5 |
Disappointed in this book.
I could sum it up in a few sentences.
1. always shoot in M
2. Use FEC - flash exposure compensation.
3. Always bounce flash where possible.
that's about it really.
some good tips but found it repetitive. | | great book: Rating: 5/5 |
| Just took receipt of this book and after only a very quick skim through I can see that is going to be invaluable in helping an amateur like myself who wants to get better with on camera flash. | | excellent book!: Rating: 5/5 |
This is not a book for total beginners so it is therefore strongly advised to first master the basic photographic exposure rules like shutterspeed, aperture and ISO.
In this (in my humble opinion excellent) book Neil Van Niekerk explains different flash photography challenges with photos and camera settings in a simple and clear manner. For photographers who are starting to venture out into the world of flash photography this book is a must.
Flash photography can sometimes be challenging and even frustrating but this book teaches you how to make your flash 'blend in' naturally without your subject/model looking as if it were flashed (to avoid that dreaded 'rabbit in the headlights' look :-)
There is no quick fix setting for all situations but after reading this book my own 'bag of tricks' has definitely become larger. | | Excellent Book on Photography: Rating: 5/5 |
This is easily the best book on photography I have ever seen. It is beautifully presented with well selected topics and good concise descriptions of the various techniques covered which incorporate the vast knowledge and experience the author obviously has of the subject. The techniques covered are well explained and illustrated with pratical examples and good supporting data. As my camera is not as good as that of the author the settings he uses are sometimes different to those I would have to use because I cannot use the very high ISO levels that he uses without experiencing more noise then he gets with his cameras. However this did not greatly detract from what I regard as an excellent reference book.
